There are several types of Sashiko techniques with various styles and approaches to stitching. One type of Sashiko is called Hitomezashi, or one stitch, and features distinct geometric patterns within a fixed grid.
In this class we will explore a world of gridded patterns and various ways to stitch, experiment with and use these patterns. Students will learn how to draw a grid, visualize and approach different patterns for stitching, sashiko stitch and experiment with pattern variations. These techniques can be used for embellishment and mending in all kinds of sewing projects.
Students will be provided with fabric swatches to practice techniques, but feel free to bring your own fabrics and clothing to work on. It's helpful to bring several options. Woven materials are best suited for this technique like denim, canvas, linen and even heavy weight jerseys.
